Fort Lauderdale Airport Car Hire | 2026 Guide

Compare car hire at Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL). On-terminal vs off-site pickup, deposit costs, toll roads, and the best suppliers for cruise passengers.

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) sits five minutes from Port Everglades — the world's third-busiest cruise port. That geography makes FLL one of the most popular car hire airports in the United States: roughly 15 million passengers pass through each year, and a huge chunk of them are picking up a car to drive to a cruise terminal, a beach condo in Pompano, or south towards the Florida Keys.

But FLL car hire has quirks that catch people out — aggressive upsells, off-site shuttle waits, SunPass toll confusion, and deposit holds that linger longer than you expect. Here's what you actually need to know.

On-Terminal vs Off-Site Pickup at FLL

On-terminal brands (inside the Rental Car Center, connected to Terminal 1 by a short walk or shuttle): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty, Dollar. These desks are in the consolidated facility at 1005 USA Way — a two-minute ride on the rental car shuttle from any terminal.

Off-site brands (require a separate shuttle, usually 10–25 minutes): Easirent, Ace, Economy Rent a Car, CarQ, Drive365, Fox, Green Motion, and a long tail of budget operators along Federal Highway (US-1).

The on-terminal pickups consistently take 10–20 minutes from curb to car. Off-site shuttles can take 30–45 minutes during cruise season (November–April) because the shuttle buses get stuck in the same traffic you're trying to escape. If you're on a tight cruise departure timeline, pay extra for on-terminal.

Deposits and Hold Amounts

Most on-terminal brands place a hold of $200–$500 on your credit card at pickup. Off-site budget brands can hold $500–$1,000 and often require a credit card — not a debit card. If you're using a debit card, confirm the deposit policy before you book, because some off-site operators will simply refuse you at the counter.

Deposit release times vary: Hertz and Enterprise typically release within 3–5 business days. Budget and Thrifty can take up to 10 business days. Always photograph the car at return and keep the receipt — disputes over damage charges spike at FLL more than most airports, likely because of the volume of one-way cruise rentals.

SunPass and Toll Roads

South Florida is toll-heavy. The main routes from FLL — I-595, I-95, Florida's Turnpike, and the airport connector road — all use SunPass electronic tolling. There are no cash booths on most of these roads anymore.

Most rental companies charge $4–$6 per day plus toll costs for a SunPass transponder. Enterprise and Alamo often include it in the rate; Budget and Thrifty typically add it at the counter. You can bring your own SunPass if you own one — just tell the counter agent not to activate theirs. The savings over a week can be $30–$40.

Fuel Policy

Virtually all suppliers at FLL use full-to-full fuel policy. Return the car with the same fuel level or you'll pay inflated per-gallon rates (often $2–$3 above pump price). The closest gas station to the Rental Car Center is a Chevron on US-1 about 4 minutes north of the return area. Fill up there — don't prepay for fuel at the counter unless your return schedule genuinely won't allow a fuel stop.

Best Suppliers for Cruise Passengers

If you're catching a cruise from Port Everglades (which is literally across the road from the Rental Car Center), the logistics are straightforward:

  • Alamo and National — both in the Rental Car Center, 5–10 minute drive to the port drop-off. National's Emerald Club lets you skip the counter entirely.
  • Enterprise — consistently reliable at FLL, no aggressive upsells, straightforward deposit terms.
  • Hertz — Gold Counter speeds things up if you're a member. Slightly pricier but the fastest pickup times.
  • Budget and Thrifty — cheaper rates but longer queues during cruise season, and deposit disputes are more common based on user feedback.

For families: request an SUV or minivan early — they sell out fast in cruise season. Compact cars are always available, but fitting five people plus luggage into a Nissan Versa after a 12-hour flight from London is not the holiday start you want.

Driving from FLL — Key Routes

To Port Everglades: 5 minutes via the airport connector. No tolls. Drop the car at the Rental Car Center and take the free port shuttle (most cruise lines run them) or a $12 Uber.

To Miami Beach / South Beach: 30–40 minutes south via I-95 or US-1. I-95 has SunPass tolls; US-1 is toll-free but slower. Avoid rush hour (7–9 AM, 4–7 PM) when I-95 crawls.

To Key West: 3.5–4 hours via US-1 south through the Florida Keys. No tolls but it's a two-lane road with 45 mph limits in the Keys. Book one-way hire if you're flying back from Key West or Miami — dropping off in the Keys carries a $100–$200 one-way fee with most brands.

To Orlando / Disney: 3 hours north via Florida's Turnpike or I-95. Turnpike is faster but has tolls (~$8 total); I-95 is toll-free once you clear the Fort Lauderdale stretch. Both are busy on weekends.

Insurance at FLL — What You Actually Need

Your home country car insurance almost certainly does not cover US car rentals. Check your travel insurance policy or credit card coverage before paying the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) at the counter — which runs $15–$30 per day.

See our car hire excess insurance explained guide for the full breakdown, but in short: if you have comprehensive travel insurance that includes rental car excess, decline the CDW at the counter and save $100+ per week. If you don't have that coverage, take CDW — Florida's no-fault insurance system makes accident costs unpredictable.

FAQ

How much does car hire cost at Fort Lauderdale Airport?

Economy cars start from around $25–$35 per day in low season (May–October) with on-terminal brands. Cruise season (November–April) pushes rates to $45–$80 per day for the same car class. Off-site brands sometimes offer $15–$20 per day rates, but factor in shuttle time and higher deposits.

Do I need an International Driving Permit for FLL?

Most visitors can drive in Florida with their home country licence for up to 12 months. However, if your licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended — some rental desks won't accept a non-English licence without one. See our choosing car hire guide for per-country rules.

Is Fort Lauderdale Airport or Miami Airport better for car hire?

FLL is smaller, faster for pickup, and closer to the cruise port. Miami International (MIA) has more supplier choice (73 vs 64) and sometimes better rates on one-ways, but MIA is 30 minutes further south. If you're cruising from Port Everglades, FLL wins. See our Sydney Airport car hire guide for a similar airport comparison format. You can also compare FLL with Orlando Airport if you're headed to the theme parks.

Can I return the car at a different location?

Yes — most major brands allow one-way returns to Miami, Orlando, or other Florida cities. Expect a $50–$200 one-way fee depending on distance and season. Dropping off in Key West commands the highest fees. Our one-way car hire explained guide has the full breakdown.

What's the cheapest car hire at FLL?

Off-site brands like Economy Rent a Car and Easirent often have the lowest daily rates ($15–$25/day). But add the shuttle time, higher deposits, and limited insurance options, and the savings shrink. If your time is worth more than $10–$15/hour, go with an on-terminal brand.

How long does it take to pick up a car at FLL?

On-terminal brands: 10–20 minutes during normal hours, up to 45 minutes during cruise embarkation days (typically Saturday and Sunday mornings). Off-site brands: 30–60 minutes including shuttle. Arrive at least 90 minutes before you need the car on cruise days.

Are there age restrictions for car hire at FLL?

Florida follows standard US car hire age rules: 25 and over, no surcharge. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a young driver surcharge of $10–$25 per day with most brands. Under 21 is generally not possible except with a few brands at significantly higher surcharges. Full details in our car hire under 25 guide.

Should I prepay for fuel at FLL?

Only if you're certain you'll return the tank empty and won't have time to refuel before drop-off. The prepaid rate per gallon is usually $2–$3 above local pump prices. For most itineraries the full-to-full policy works out cheaper — refuel at the Chevron on US-1 on your way back.
