Easy late-night pickup
Flight landed close to midnight and I half expected problems, but they still had everything sorted. Keys in about 12 minutes, car clean, no drama. Good start.
Supplier reviews
Hertz is one of the easiest global car hire brands to recognise, but the real question is how often that familiarity translates into a smooth pickup. In Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East, and the US, Hertz usually offers a broad airport network, predictable fleet standards, and decent availability for business travellers and families. The trade-off is that pricing is not always the cheapest, and local desk quality still matters more than the logo above the counter. Our view: Hertz is usually a safer choice when you care more about process than rock-bottom price. Read the reviews below to see where Hertz gets the basics right, where staffing slips, and whether the premium over cheaper rivals is justified in the locations that matter for your trip.

I rented from Hertz at Lisbon Airport for a quick business trip. The location is convenient—just a short walk from the arrivals hall—and the queue moved reasonably fast since I arrived mid-morning. The car itself, a VW Golf, was clean inside and out, which I appreciated. However, the service felt purely transactional and cold. The agent was clearly unhappy when I declined the additional Super Cover and spent a solid five minutes trying to upsell me, warning about 'common scratches' on Portuguese roads. It felt like unnecessary pressure. I stood my ground, but it left a sour note on an otherwise average experience. The deposit hold was high but released promptly after return. It gets the job done, but don't expect a warm welcome.

Picking up a car in Manhattan is a special kind of madness. Hertz was organised but the garage exit during rush hour cost us 40 minutes. Car itself was great.

Hertz city branch pickup was fine. Car was decent. But the one-way fee to the airport on return was buried in the small print. Always read the full terms in Thailand.

City centre pickup on the European side. Roads are intense but manageable once you leave the centre. Hertz staff were professional, extras were pushed hard.

I rented from Hertz at Split Airport for a week of solo travel along the coast. The process was pretty smooth overall. I had a reservation for 9 AM, and there was a short queue, but I was at the counter within ten minutes. The agent did try to upsell me on their super insurance, which I declined since my credit card covers it, and they didn't push back or make it awkward. I received a VW Polo which was perfect for the narrow coastal roads—clean and with a full tank. The hold on my credit card was exactly what was quoted. A solid, reliable experience without any nasty surprises.

Sydney Airport rental pickup is usually chaos, but this was surprisingly organised. We were out in under 10 minutes and got a near-new Corolla hybrid. Cost around $286 for three days which felt fair enough.

Everything worked perfectly. The Mercedes was immaculate, staff were efficient, and the return process at Changi was the easiest airport drop-off we've ever experienced.

My partner and I rented from Hertz at Munich Airport last month for a week-long road trip to the Alps. The process was pretty smooth overall. We arrived at the counter around 9 AM and were pleasantly surprised that there wasn't much of a queue. The staff member was professional and efficient. As expected, they did try to upsell us on the full coverage insurance, but a polite decline was all it took to move on—no hard sell tactics which I appreciated. We booked an intermediate sedan and received a VW Passat with low mileage. The car was clean inside and out, and drove perfectly for the entire journey. Returning the vehicle was just as easy, taking only a few minutes. If you're looking for a reliable option at this airport, Hertz is a solid bet. I'd use them again.

Not many car hire options in Sarajevo but Hertz delivered. Small Peugeot, clean, drove well on the mountain roads. Return process took literally 3 minutes.

Shuttle wait plus paperwork still totalled 28 minutes, but that counts as efficient here, and the Chevy Malibu was cleaner than many rivals manage after red-eye arrivals.

Pickup was under 12 minutes and the Nissan X-Trail was fresh, yet a later dispute over an already-marked wheel scuff showed why a full video at DXB still matters.

The lot is easy to find, the Toyota Corolla hybrid was nearly new, and staff handled child-seat fitting faster than most airport desks manage a credit-card swipe.

The counter was brisk and the Chevrolet Aveo acceptable, but the usual Mexico insurance theatre was fully switched on, with staff warning darkly about liability until you stood firm.

Our wait hit 42 minutes after a bank of regional arrivals, but the Honda City was clean, air-conditioning icy, and the contract did at least spell out the THB excess clearly.

I picked up my rental from Hertz at Tivat Airport late in the afternoon. There was a bit of a queue, but the staff member handled it efficiently and I was at the counter within fifteen minutes. As a solo traveller, I appreciated that they didn't try to aggressively upsell me on extra insurance, though I did note the hold deposit amount was clearly explained before we finalized everything. I was given a VW Polo which was perfect for navigating the winding roads along the coast. The car was clean and matched the class I booked online. It wasn't a lightning-fast process, but the service was professional and the car was reliable. Overall, a solid choice for exploring Montenegro.

We rented from Hertz at Athens airport for a week-long road trip around the Peloponnese with friends. Honestly, I was expecting a bit of a hassle given how busy airports usually are, but the process was surprisingly smooth. We arrived at the counter around midday and there was no queue at all. The staff member—think his name was Dimitris—was efficient and friendly. He didn't push the extra insurance on us too hard, which I really appreciated. We had booked a compact SUV and got a nearly new Toyota Corolla Cross, which was perfect for the mountain roads. The car was clean and exactly what we needed. It made the start of our holiday completely stress-free. I’d definitely use this location again.

We chose Hertz at Rome Fiumicino for our family holiday because we've used them before and trusted the brand. However, the experience was pretty mixed. The biggest issue was the wait time. After a long flight with two tired kids, standing in line for nearly 45 minutes to reach the counter was exhausting. It seemed like they were understaffed for the volume of arrivals. On the positive side, the staff member was polite enough and didn't aggressively push the extra insurance, which I appreciated. We were given a decent Volkswagen Tiguan that fit our luggage comfortably, and the car itself was clean and ran without issues for the entire week. If you can get past the slow queue at the start, the actual vehicle is fine, but be prepared for a tedious pickup process.

I rented from Hertz at Václav Havel Airport for a two-day business trip. The location is conveniently situated right in the arrivals hall, which saved me time. There was a short queue around 10 AM, but I was at the counter within ten minutes. The staff member did ask about upgrading my insurance, which I expected, but he accepted my 'no' immediately without the hard sell I've experienced at other European locations. I was given a Skoda Octavia, which was perfect for driving into the city center—clean interior and solid fuel economy. The return process was also seamless; the attendant checked the car over quickly and I was on my way to the terminal. A reliable choice for business travelers.

I usually stick with big names like Hertz for peace of mind, but my experience at Split Airport was genuinely frustrating. I arrived at the counter around 9 AM, expecting a quick pickup, but the queue was incredibly slow. It took nearly 45 minutes just to reach the booth. The staff member was polite enough but pushed the insurance upsell quite aggressively. I declined since my credit card covers me, but I was surprised to find an extra 'cleaning fee' and a vague administrative charge on my final invoice that wasn't mentioned clearly at the start. The car, a well-worn VW Golf, was fine, but the hidden costs definitely soured the trip. I won't be using Hertz here again.

We rented from Hertz at Sydney Airport for a friends' road trip down the coast. The process was pretty efficient overall. We arrived at the counter around 9 AM on a Saturday and the queue moved quickly. The staff member did ask if we wanted to upgrade our insurance, which is standard, but he backed off immediately when we said no—no hard sell at all which was a relief. We got a Toyota Corolla which was clean and ran well for the whole week. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the car had a few minor scratches that we had to point out to avoid disputes later, but the staff noted them down without any fuss. Solid experience.

We picked up our rental from Hertz at Sydney Airport around 9 AM on a Tuesday to start our honeymoon road trip. The process was relatively smooth, though the queue took about twenty minutes. The staff member at the counter did mention insurance options, but accepted our polite decline without any pressure, which we appreciated. We were given a Toyota Corolla that was clean and ran perfectly for our drive up the coast. The only reason I’m holding back a star is that the wait time was a bit longer than expected. Otherwise, a solid experience for a romantic getaway.

We landed at Vienna airport for our family holiday and headed straight to the Hertz counter. It was surprisingly easy to find in the arrivals hall, and we were lucky enough to be served by a very professional agent named Thomas. There was absolutely no queue when we arrived around 10 AM, which was a relief after a long flight with the kids. Unlike some rental experiences I’ve had, there was no aggressive upselling for extra insurance, which I really appreciated. The car we booked—a Skoda Octavia wagon—was ready and waiting exactly as described. It was clean, spacious enough for our luggage, and perfect for the Autobahn. I rented from Hertz at Kos Airport as a solo traveler, and it turned into a complete nightmare. The pickup process was relatively quick, but the problems started when I returned the vehicle. The staff member inspecting the car claimed he found a scratch on the rear bumper that I certainly didn't cause. Despite having taken photos upon collection, they argued that the mark was new and charged my credit card €400 for the damage excess without proper discussion. It felt like a total scam targeting tourists who wouldn't have the time to fight the charges. The car itself was fine, but the predatory attitude of the staff ruined my trip. I strongly advise caution and taking extensive video evidence if you have no choice but to use them.

I was a bit worried about renting a car solo in Croatia, but my experience with Hertz at Dubrovnik Airport was surprisingly stress-free. I arrived at the counter around 10:30 AM and there was absolutely no queue, which was a relief. The staff member who served me was friendly and efficient. I had already paid online, so he just offered the usual excess reduction insurance, but accepted my polite refusal without any pushy sales tactics. I was given a nearly new Volkswagen Polo, which was spotless inside and out. The fuel policy was fair, and the deposit hold on my card was processed quickly. It made driving down to the coast incredibly easy. Highly recommended if you want a hassle-free start to your holiday.

We rented from Hertz at Athens airport for the start of our honeymoon, heading straight for Nafplio. I was a bit worried after reading mixed reviews, but the process was actually quite smooth. There was a short queue when we landed around 9 AM, but the staff moved things along efficiently. We were offered the usual insurance upgrade, which we declined since we had our own coverage, and the agent didn't push it aggressively which was a relief. We got a nearly new Toyota Yaris which was perfect for the winding roads and easy to park in the city. The only slight hiccup was the deposit hold taking a few days to clear after drop-off, but honestly, it was a stress-free start to our trip. Would use them again.
