Car hire reviews
Car hire in Sydney makes the most sense when your plans extend beyond the harbour city. Inside central Sydney, a car is often a burden: parking is costly, traffic is dense, and public transport covers most inner-city routes well. But for day trips to the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley wine region, the South Coast, or the Royal National Park, a rental becomes genuinely useful. Sydney Airport (SYD) pickup is usually the best choice because supplier choice is broad, airport logistics are efficient, and you can head straight onto the M4 or M1 without navigating CBD congestion first. City pickup can work for later departures, but availability is thinner. This is left-hand drive territory, and Australian road rules are strictly enforced with speed cameras and toll roads common around Sydney. Expect tolls on major routes, right-lane merging, and compact to mid-size cars as the practical sweet spot. The reviews below help you identify which Sydney suppliers keep the process clean and which ones overcomplicate what should be straightforward. For more on Australian rentals, see our Australia car hire guide, and compare Hertz and Avis for strong domestic networks.

Picked up from the Avis branch near Town Hall station. Compact SUV, full tank, quick paperwork. Insurance was expensive but the process itself was painless.

Arrived from a 14-hour flight and Sixt had us in the car within 20 minutes. The Mercedes CLA was a luxury we appreciated, though the Sydney traffic reminder was genuinely helpful.

Premium city location for business trips. The Mazda 3 was perfect for Blue Mountains day trips. Parking apps essential.

Honestly, renting a car at Sydney Airport can be a bit of a nightmare, but Sixt made it incredibly easy for us. We arrived around 9:00 AM expecting a long wait, but there was literally no queue at the counter. The staff member was friendly and didn't push the excess reduction insurance on us, which was a relief after a long flight with the kids. We were given a near-new Kia Carnival which was perfect for our luggage. The pricing was exactly what we booked online—no hidden surprises. It was the most stress-free start to a holiday we've had in years.

Pickup ran smoothly and the contract was clean, but the domestic-terminal return area got congested fast and staff looked rushed once the morning departures wave kicked in.

We reserved a compact SUV and got a small hatch instead, with a partial refund offered but little sympathy for the luggage puzzle it created.

The lot is easy to find, the Toyota Corolla hybrid was nearly new, and staff handled child-seat fitting faster than most airport desks manage a credit-card swipe.

Picked up from the Kent Street branch instead of the terminal. Same car class, no shuttle stress, and the staff actually had time to explain the parking sensors.

We rented from Hertz at Sydney Airport for a friends' road trip down the coast. The process was pretty efficient overall. We arrived at the counter around 9 AM on a Saturday and the queue moved quickly. The staff member did ask if we wanted to upgrade our insurance, which is standard, but he backed off immediately when we said no—no hard sell at all which was a relief. We got a Toyota Corolla which was clean and ran well for the whole week. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the car had a few minor scratches that we had to point out to avoid disputes later, but the staff noted them down without any fuss. Solid experience.

We picked up our rental from Hertz at Sydney Airport around 9 AM on a Tuesday to start our honeymoon road trip. The process was relatively smooth, though the queue took about twenty minutes. The staff member at the counter did mention insurance options, but accepted our polite decline without any pressure, which we appreciated. We were given a Toyota Corolla that was clean and ran perfectly for our drive up the coast. The only reason I’m holding back a star is that the wait time was a bit longer than expected. Otherwise, a solid experience for a romantic getaway.

Picking up from the domestic side saved the terminal transfer drama. Older Hyundai but it ran fine for our Blue Mountains trip. Staff were patient with our luggage Tetris.

I was honestly dreading the car rental process at Sydney Airport, having waited over an hour with other companies before, but this experience with Avis was a total breeze. We arrived at the desk around 9 AM on a Friday, and there was literally no queue. The staff member was efficient and friendly, getting us on our way in under ten minutes. I appreciated that they didn't aggressively push the insurance upsell, which can be really frustrating when you just want to get moving. We were given a nearly new Toyota Corolla that was spotless inside and out. The pricing was exactly what we booked online with no hidden surprises. It completely changed my perception of airport rentals. For a hassle-free start to a weekend break, I can't recommend them enough.
