Supplier reviews
Sixt often sits in the premium-but-not-luxury lane of car hire. The brand tends to do well on newer fleets, attractive vehicle choice, and strong airport presence across Europe, especially for travellers who want an automatic, an executive model, or something a little less tired than the average rental hatchback. The downside is familiar too: sharper upselling, firmer deposit expectations, and location-by-location variation in how the premium promise is delivered. Our quick verdict is that Sixt can be excellent when the local desk is efficient and transparent, but it is not automatically the most relaxed supplier in the terminal. If you are weighing Sixt for a European holiday, read the location reviews closely for queue times, insurance pressure, and how often the booked class matches the handover reality.

I rented from Sixt at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport for a three-day business trip. I arrived at the desk around 9:00 AM and was pleasantly surprised to find no queue, which was a relief as I had a meeting to get to. The staff member was professional and didn't push the insurance upsell too hard when I declined the extra coverage. I was given a Skoda Octavia, which was clean and perfect for the drive into New Belgrade. The return process was just as efficient; I dropped the keys off at the terminal, and the staff did a quick walk-around. My security deposit was released back to my card within three days. A solid choice for business travelers needing reliable transport in Serbia.

Picked up near the port and drove to Hvar. The Fiat 500 was perfect for Croatian coastal roads. No airport surcharge.

Spotless Range Rover, zero queue, full insurance included in the rate. Dubai roads are wide and forgiving. Easily the most polished rental experience of the year.

Japanese rental culture is next-level. Car was wrapped in protective covers, staff bowed, GPS was pre-loaded with English. Couldn't fault a thing.

Sixt at Sofia were brilliant. New VW Polo, full tank, no damage issues. They even helped me with a local SIM card recommendation. Will 100% book with them again.

Arrived from a 14-hour flight and Sixt had us in the car within 20 minutes. The Mercedes CLA was a luxury we appreciated, though the Sydney traffic reminder was genuinely helpful.

Efficient German efficiency on full display. Car was ready, paperwork was fast, GPS was already charged. Returned it three days later, no issues.

Navigating Paris traffic is its own adventure, but the Sixt pickup was slick. Car was a compact diesel — sensible choice for French toll roads.

Honestly, renting a car at Sydney Airport can be a bit of a nightmare, but Sixt made it incredibly easy for us. We arrived around 9:00 AM expecting a long wait, but there was literally no queue at the counter. The staff member was friendly and didn't push the excess reduction insurance on us, which was a relief after a long flight with the kids. We were given a near-new Kia Carnival which was perfect for our luggage. The pricing was exactly what we booked online—no hidden surprises. It was the most stress-free start to a holiday we've had in years.

The counter and fleet both impress, but the optional protections are eye-wateringly priced and the initial pre-authorisation can startle anyone who only glanced at the booking confirmation.

We collected a clean Kia Sportage in 15 minutes, all damage was marked carefully, and the branch handled an early return without fuss — rare enough here to be worth celebrating.

The Mercedes was perfect for Barossa trips. Staff knew McLaren Vale routes. Premium but worth it.

Staff recommended ski resort routes. The Kia Carnival was ideal for family trips. Korean rental standards are high.

The counter felt more premium hotel than rental desk, and the BMW 3 Series was immaculate, but the blocked deposit and optional zero-excess package were both firmly in luxury territory.

We booked with Sixt for our couple's trip to Croatia and found them to be a solid choice overall. We arrived at the desk around midday and, thankfully, the queue wasn't too long, which was a relief after a tiring flight. The staff member was professional and didn't aggressively push the extra insurance, though we did take the basic coverage just for peace of mind on the coastal roads. We received an upgrade to a slightly newer Volkswagen, which was a nice bonus. The car handled well for the drive up to Ston. Dropping the keys off was surprisingly easy—we just parked up and handed them over. My only minor gripe is that the hold on the credit card deposit took about a week to clear, but otherwise, it was good value for money.

The fleet quality is excellent and our automatic Peugeot 3008 was spotless, but insurance upselling came fast and loud, with staff framing the standard package as if every Bosphorus merge ends in catastrophe.

We were on the road in under ten minutes with a spotless Audi Q2, and aside from the predictable €18/day protection push, the whole interaction felt premium and well drilled.

Staff prepared us for Arctic driving conditions. The Audi had winter tyres standard. Finnish efficiency at its best.

A beautifully prepared VW Tiguan and efficient handover were undermined only by an exhausting push for excess reduction, glass cover and a second driver bundle that added more than the daily rental rate.

Impressively quick handover for a UK airport, and the BMW 1 Series was the cleanest rental we've had in years. Deposit was chunky but the excess options were clearly explained.

The Mini Countryman was pristine and pickup took 14 minutes, though staff returned to the €1,300 excess conversation often enough that even seasoned renters may feel worn down.

A polished desk, a near-new BMW 1 Series and a genuinely quick 11-minute pickup impressed, but the blocked deposit plus excess exposure will hurt if your limit is tight.

The counter was slick and the Audi A3 upgrade was real rather than theoretical, but expect a chunky card pre-authorisation and a persistent pitch for tyre-and-glass cover at €17/day.

The handover is often impressively fast and cars feel fresh, but travellers planning Albania or Croatia detours should budget for cross-border approval before getting excited by the base rate.

Sixt were efficient but there was a 20 min queue when our flight landed. Car itself was perfect — a Golf, well maintained. Return was dead easy.

From landing to driving took 22 minutes, including the S-Bahn to the rental center. The Audi A3 was showroom-clean and the staff answered every question about Autobahn rules.

The counter was organised and the VW Polo was clean, but no amount of car quality prepares you for Bali traffic. Staff warned us about the airport area congestion honestly.

The cars are often some of the best presented at Eleftherios Venizelos, but the counter team can push premium cover and category upgrades with the confidence of a luxury retailer.

Modern fleet with the VW Tiguan in perfect condition. Staff warned about beach parking time limits which saved us a ticket. More premium than expected for a holiday destination.

Pickup took barely ten minutes and the VW T-Cross was immaculate, but the optional excess reduction was framed with enough theatre to suggest the Atlantic coast might devour uninsured tyres whole.

A 12-minute queue and a spotless Peugeot 2008 made a strong first impression, but the desk still pushed €19/day super cover three times after explaining the standard CDW excess sat at €1,400.

Pristine VW Polo, fast paperwork, and clear instructions on ferry permissions for island hopping. The only letdown was an aggressive tyre insurance pitch at the end.

Cars are usually among the newest at Nikola Tesla, yet the insurance script is relentless enough that renters relying on credit-card cover should arrive ready to say no twice.

The fleet quality is better than average for Montenegro, but August arrivals can face a cramped counter area and rushed explanations on tolls, fuel and border paperwork.

Expect newer Volkswagens and brisk paperwork, but the security hold can feel hefty and cross-border permissions need asking for in writing before you leave the airport.

My partner and I had a terrible experience with Sixt at Vienna airport during our couple's trip. We arrived at 8 AM expecting a quick pickup, but the queue was incredibly long. Things only got worse when we returned the vehicle. Despite walking around the car with the agent and marking every scratch on the diagram before driving off, they later claimed we caused damage to the rear bumper that was definitely not there when we parked it. It felt like a complete scam to charge us extra fees. We disputed it immediately, but their customer service was dismissive and unhelpful. It has left a sour taste in our mouths, and we certainly won't be renting from Sixt in Austria again. Be very careful and take your own time-stamped photos if you have no other choice but to use them.

I rented from Sixt at Dublin Airport as a solo traveler earlier this month, and it was a huge mistake. The pickup process took nearly 45 minutes because there was only one agent working the counter, despite the long queue. I was aggressively upsold on a toll plan I didn't really need, but the real issue started after I got home. A week later, I noticed extra charges on my credit card for 'windscreen damage' and an admin fee. I definitely didn't crack the windshield, and no one contacted me to discuss it before they took the money. It feels like a scam to squeeze extra cash out of tourists who have already left the country. I won't be using them again.

Rented from Sixt at Munich Airport for a road trip to the Alps with three friends. We arrived at the counter around 9 AM on a Saturday and the queue was honestly a mess—it took nearly 45 minutes just to get served. Once we got to the desk, the staff member was professional but really pushed hard on the insurance upsell, which got a bit tiresome after a while. To their credit, the car we got was a nearly new VW Passat estate, which was perfect for our luggage. The vehicle was clean and drove smoothly for the whole week. If you can look past the long wait times and the aggressive sales tactics at the desk, the actual fleet quality is solid. Just make sure you budget extra time for pickup.

My partner and I chose Sixt for our recent couple's trip to Serbia, and honestly, it was the easiest rental experience we've ever had. We landed at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport around midday and expected the usual chaos at the desk, but there was literally no queue. We were helped immediately by a friendly agent who didn't try to force any expensive insurance add-ons on us, which was a refreshing change. The pricing was transparent and exactly what we booked online. We were given an almost new Skoda Octavia that was spotless and drove perfectly for our week-long trip. Returning the car was just as quick. If you're looking for a reliable hire company in Belgrade without the hidden fees or long waits, I can't recommend them enough.
