City centre pickup on the European side. Roads are intense but manageable once you leave the centre. Hertz staff were professional, extras were pushed hard.

For such a sprawling airport, signage was good and paperwork took just 17 minutes, though the local rules on bridge toll transponders deserved a clearer written handout.

A 38-minute queue and a last-minute category change from compact SUV to sedan took the shine off an otherwise polite handover, especially for travellers hauling family luggage.

The fleet quality is excellent and our automatic Peugeot 3008 was spotless, but insurance upselling came fast and loud, with staff framing the standard package as if every Bosphorus merge ends in catastrophe.

Avis at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen handled our pickup professionally — the Toyota RAV4 was waiting with under 15,000km on the clock. Drop-off at the same terminal was quick. Watch the cross-border restrictions if heading to Georgia.

Sabiha Gokcen is on the Asian side so factor in traffic to European Istanbul. Hertz counter took 25 minutes on a Friday. Car was clean, return was straightforward.
