Tampa Airport Car Hire | 2026 Guide

Compare car hire at Tampa Airport (TPA). On-airport pickup, SunPass tolls, deposit amounts, best suppliers, and key driving routes around Tampa Bay.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) handles about 23 million passengers a year and serves as the main gateway to Florida's Gulf Coast — Clearwater, St Pete Beach, Sarasota, and the spring training belt. It's also the airport of choice for anyone heading to Orlando theme parks from the west side.

Tampa's car hire operation is well organised — all major brands operate from the airport's Rental Car Center, accessible via a short SkyConnect train from the main terminal. But the same Florida caveats apply: SunPass tolls, deposit holds, aggressive upsells, and seasonal price spikes during snowbird season (January–March) and spring training (February–March).

Pickup at Tampa Airport — How It Works

All car hire at TPA is consolidated in the Rental Car Center at 5605 US Airside Blvd. From any terminal, take the free SkyConnect train (runs every 2–3 minutes, 2-minute ride). You'll find Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, Thrifty, and several others at the counter level.

Off-site brands (Green Motion, Fox, Easirent, Drive365) run shuttle buses from the ground transportation area outside the baggage claim. Shuttles take 10–20 minutes depending on traffic on Airport Blvd.

Queue times: During normal hours, on-airport pickup takes 10–20 minutes. On Saturday mornings in February and March (peak spring training arrivals), expect 30–45 minutes. Enterprise and National consistently have the shortest queues; Budget and Thrifty the longest.

Deposits and Hold Amounts

BrandTypical DepositAccepts Debit?Release Time
Enterprise$200–$300Yes (with credit check)3–5 business days
Hertz$200Yes3–5 business days
Avis$300–$500Yes5–7 business days
National$300Yes5–7 business days
Sixt$500Credit card only5–10 business days
Dollar/Thrifty$300–$500Debit with return ticketUp to 10 business days

The key insight: if you're using a debit card, Enterprise and Hertz are your safest bets. Sixt requires a credit card with available credit of at least $500. Budget and Thrifty accept debit but run a credit check that can add 15–20 minutes at the counter.

SunPass and Tolls Around Tampa

Tampa Bay has extensive toll roads. The main ones you'll encounter:

  • Sunshine Skyway Bridge (I-275 south to Bradenton/Sarasota): $1.50 with SunPass, $2.50 without (they mail a bill to the rental company)
  • Veterans Expressway (SR-589 to northwest Tampa suburbs): $1.50–$3.00 depending on distance
  • Selmon Expressway (SR-618, downtown to Brandon): $0.50–$1.50
  • I-4 to Orlando: mostly free, but the express lanes cost $0.50–$3.50

Most rental brands charge $4–$6/day for SunPass. Some (Enterprise, National) include it in base rates. Others charge a per-toll convenience fee ($3.50 per toll plus the toll amount) if you don't opt for SunPass and they get billed. That gets expensive fast on the Skyway.

Tip: If you're planning lots of driving, activate the rental SunPass — it's cheaper than the per-toll admin fee. If you're only going to Clearwater Beach and back (no tolls), decline it.

Fuel Policy

Tampa follows the standard US model: full-to-full. There's a Shell and a BP station on Boy Scout Blvd, about 3 minutes from the Rental Car Center return area. Fill up there before returning — the per-gallon fuel charge from the rental desk runs $6–$8 versus ~$3.20 at local pumps.

Never accept the "prepaid fuel" option unless you're genuinely going to return the tank almost empty. Most people don't, and the unused fuel becomes a pure profit centre for the rental company.

Which Supplier Should You Pick at TPA?

Best overall: Enterprise — fewest complaints about damage disputes, reasonable deposit, debit card accepted, and staff consistently rated helpful in our review data.

Best for speed: National — if you join the free Emerald Club, you walk straight to the car row, pick your vehicle, and drive off. No counter visit. This saves 15–20 minutes during busy periods.

Best value on-airport: Dollar and Thrifty — usually $5–$15/day cheaper than Enterprise or Hertz. Trade-off: longer queues, more upsell pressure, slower deposit refunds.

Best premium option: Sixt — newer cars (often under 5,000 miles), BMW and Mercedes options, but credit card required and higher deposits.

Budget brands to approach with caution: Green Motion and Easirent — their daily rates are the lowest at TPA ($18–$25/day), but they're off-site with long shuttles, high deposits ($500–$1,000), and more damage disputes per review than any other category. Driving from Tampa — Key Routes

To Clearwater Beach: 30 minutes west via FL-60 (Courtney Campbell Causeway). No tolls. Parking at Clearwater Beach runs $3–$5/hour or $25/day. Go early — the lots fill by 10 AM on weekends.

To St Pete Beach: 35 minutes south via I-275 and the Pinellas Bayway. SunPass helpful for the I-275 express lanes but not essential. The Pinellas Bayway has a $1.50 toll bridge to the beach.

To Sarasota / Siesta Key: 60 minutes south via I-75. No tolls on I-75 itself, but the Skyway Bridge (if you take I-275) costs $1.50 with SunPass. Siesta Key parking fills fast — the public lot has about 400 spaces for a beach that consistently ranks in the US top 10.

To Orlando / Walt Disney World: 75–90 minutes east via I-4. No tolls on the main I-4 lanes. Express lanes cost $0.50–$3.50 but rarely save more than 10 minutes. Traffic on I-4 is notoriously unpredictable — allow extra time during afternoon rush (3–7 PM) and weekend theme park peaks. See our car hire USA for Australians guide if you're visiting from Australia.

To Fort Myers / Naples: 2 hours south via I-75. No tolls. The drive is flat and straight — easy but dull. Stop at the Babcock Ranch for a swamp buggy tour if you need a break.

One-Way Rentals from Tampa

Tampa to Miami: $50–$150 one-way fee depending on season. Tampa to Fort Lauderdale: $75–$200. Tampa to Key West: $200–$400 (some brands won't allow it in peak season). One-way to Orlando is usually free — most brands have excess inventory they want moved east.

Insurance at Tampa Airport

Florida is a no-fault insurance state, which makes accident costs unpredictable. Your travel insurance or credit card may cover the rental car excess — check before paying CDW at the counter ($15–$30/day). If you have coverage, decline it. If you don't, take it — Florida medical costs can be astronomical even for minor accidents.

Our insurance guide and car hire excess insurance explained pages cover the details, including which credit cards actually pay out (many don't cover SUVs or luxury vehicles — a problem if you hired a Hertz Mustang or Sixt BMW).

FAQ

How much does car hire cost at Tampa Airport?

Economy cars from on-airport brands start at $25–$35/day in low season (May–December). Snowbird season (January–March) pushes rates to $45–$70/day. Off-site brands offer $15–$25/day but include the shuttle time, higher deposits, and more limited insurance options. Check our Tampa Airport reviews for supplier-specific ratings.

Do I need a SunPass at Tampa Airport?

Not for all trips. Driving to Clearwater Beach or downtown Tampa requires no tolls. Heading to Sarasota, the Skyway Bridge, or using express lanes on I-275 does. Most rental companies charge $4–$6/day for SunPass. Compare that against the per-toll admin fee ($3.50 per toll) to see which works out cheaper for your itinerary.

Is Tampa or Orlando Airport better for car hire?

Orlando (MCO) has more suppliers (63 vs 49) and sometimes lower rates due to volume, but it's an hour inland. If you're heading to the Gulf Coast beaches, fly into Tampa and save the drive. For Disney/Universal, Orlando is closer. See our Orlando Airport page for the comparison data.

Can I return the car at a different location?

Yes — all major brands at TPA support one-way returns. Fees range from $0 (Tampa to Orlando in most seasons) to $200–$400 (Tampa to Key West in peak). Book one-way in advance — walk-up one-way rates are significantly higher. Our one-way car hire guide covers the details.

What's the minimum age for car hire at Tampa Airport?

25 for standard rates with no surcharge. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a young driver surcharge of $10–$25/day. Under 21 is almost impossible at on-airport brands. Full details in our under 25 car hire guide.

How far is Tampa Airport from Clearwater Beach?

About 12 miles / 30 minutes via FL-60 West (Courtney Campbell Causeway). No tolls. Parking at Clearwater fills by 10 AM on weekends — consider the ParkDirect app or park at the downtown Clearwater garage and take the trolley.

Are there electric vehicle rentals at TPA?

Yes — Hertz and Enterprise occasionally have Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Leaf vehicles. They're not guaranteed and cost a premium ($80–$120/day). Charging infrastructure around Tampa is adequate but not extensive; plan your route using PlugShare before committing to an EV rental.

Should I buy the rental company's insurance?

Only if your travel insurance or credit card doesn't cover US rental car excess. Florida's no-fault system makes accident costs unpredictable. Check our excess insurance guide before you decide — the CDW at the counter runs $15–$30/day and is often redundant if you're already covered.
