Waited 40 minutes in the Hertz queue at Zadar during the last week of August. Hyundai Tucson was clean and drove well for our five-day island-hop route. Deposit took 10 days to clear.

Skoda Octavia, 38,000 km, handled our Zadar–Šibenik–Trogir route perfectly. Paid €52/day in June. Counter process was 15 minutes. September return was fast — no queue, five-minute exit.

Locally-owned Croatian chain with a desk inside the terminal — no shuttle needed. Renault Megane, 31,000 km. Staff were helpful and gave us a paper map of the Dalmatian coast unprompted.

Opel Corsa, 55,000 km. It did the job for our four days along the Dalmatian coast. No major damage on return but the car smelled of cigarettes — wish they'd specified the non-smoking policy.

The online rate of €32/day was genuine but the counter agent pushed three add-ons before giving us the keys. Total damage waiver alone added €14/day. Still cheaper than some alternatives but not as cheap as the headline.
