Queue was 35 minutes in peak season but the Fiat 500 was clean and ran perfectly for our week in western Crete. Full-to-full fuel, no hidden charges.

Skip-the-line pickup worth the extra €15/day. Staff highlighted Knossos turnoff unprompted. Car was a nearly new Peugeot 308 with zero issues.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid was perfect for Crete's mix of highways and mountain switchbacks. Fuel savings of roughly €40 over the week. Pickup took 20 minutes.

Rate was unbeatable but shuttle plus 50-minute queue tested our patience. Car had scratches everywhere, all documented. Budget double the time you think you need.

Staff suggested skipping the north toll road for the scenic national road — great local tip. Skoda Kamiq had plenty of boot space for four suitcases.
