Debit Card Car Hire: Which Suppliers Actually Accept Them
Most rental companies demand a credit card. These suppliers accept debit cards — and the catches you need to know before you book.
The question that kills more rental bookings than anything else: can I use a debit card? This guide covers everything you need to know about debit card car hire before you book.
You book a car, land at the airport, reach the desk with passport and debit card in hand — and the agent shakes their head. "Credit card only." If you do not have one, your holiday transport plan just collapsed.
At ReviewCarHire, debit card disputes appear in roughly one in eight reviews. Some travellers knew the rule and prepared. Most did not. This guide is the definitive list of who accepts what, where, and what they charge for the privilege.
Why suppliers prefer credit cards
Credit cards give suppliers two protections debit cards do not:
- Pre-authorisation holds: A €500–1,500 hold on a credit card does not leave your account. On a debit card it physically locks your money for 1–4 weeks.
- Chargeback protection: If you damage the car and refuse to pay, the supplier can charge your credit card. Debit cards do not allow this — they need your explicit authorisation every time.
Because of this, most suppliers default to credit-only. But some will accept debit if you meet extra conditions.
Which suppliers accept debit cards
Fully accept debit cards (no major restrictions)
| Supplier | Countries | Conditions | Surcharge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | UK, Ireland, most of Europe | Full coverage insurance required | None |
| Sixt | Germany, Austria, UK, USA | Driver age 25+, valid ID | €5–15 per day |
| Dollar / Thrifty | USA, UK | Pre-pay full rental + all insurances | None |
| Alamo | USA, Caribbean | Must purchase full protection | None |
Accept debit cards with heavy restrictions
| Supplier | Restriction | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hertz | Only at selected locations; full insurance mandatory; credit check may be run | €10–25/day surcharge |
| Avis | UK and USA mainly; not at all European mainland airports; proof of return travel required | €5–15/day |
| Budget | Same as Avis (same parent company); rarely accepted outside UK/USA | €5–15/day |
| Europcar | Selected locations only; usually requires full excess waiver | Variable |
| Goldcar | Spain and Portugal mainly; maximum hold on account €1,200 | None |
Never accept debit cards
| Supplier | Policy |
|---|---|
| Green Motion | Credit card only at all locations |
| National | USA credit card only; debit never accepted |
| Local Croatian suppliers | Almost universally credit-only; rare exceptions on request |
The UK debit card exception
The UK market treats debit cards differently. Enterprise, Sixt, and Dollar all accept UK debit cards with minimal fuss. The reason is UK consumer law and the prevalence of debit card use.
At London Heathrow and Edinburgh, debit card users report smooth pickups. One reviewer said: "Only had my Monzo debit card. Enterprise accepted it with no surcharge. Pre-auth was £500, released after 4 days."
This is the exception, not the rule. Do not expect the same treatment in Spain, Italy, or Croatia.
What happens if you only have a debit card
If you arrive with only a debit card and the supplier demands credit, you have three options:
- Pay a premium surcharge — usually €15–30 per day for the entire rental
- Purchase full insurance at the desk — this unlocks debit acceptance at some suppliers but often costs €20–40 per day
- Walk away and book elsewhere — but last-minute airport bookings cost 2–3× more than advance rates
None of these are good. The fix is checking before you book, not at the desk.
Pre-authorisation on debit cards: why it hurts
A €1,000 pre-auth on a debit card removes actual money from your balance. That money is frozen, not spent, but you cannot use it until released. Typical release times:
| Card type | Pre-auth release |
|---|---|
| Visa / Mastercard credit | 3–7 working days |
| Visa / Mastercard debit | 7–14 working days |
| Pre-paid travel cards | 14–21 working days |
If you are hiring for two weeks with a €1,200 deposit and paying for the holiday on the same card, the timing can ruin your cash flow.
How to book with a debit card without surprises
Step 1: Confirm acceptance before booking Call the branch directly. Website terms say "may accept debit" — the branch says yes or no. Trust the branch.
Step 2: Verify pre-auth amount Ask: "If I pay with debit, what is the hold amount and how long until it releases?" If the answer is vague, assume the worst.
Step 3: Book full insurance Suppliers who accept debit almost always require full coverage. Factor this into your total cost from the start.
Step 4: Use a high-balance account Do not use your day-to-day account for a €1,500 hold. Use a secondary account where the freeze does not affect rent or bills.
FAQ
Can I rent a car with a debit card in Europe?
Sometimes. In the UK and Ireland, yes, with Enterprise and Sixt. In Spain and Portugal, Goldcar sometimes accepts debit. In most of mainland Europe, it is credit-only or requires full insurance.
Why do rental companies require a credit card?
Credit cards allow pre-authorisation holds that do not remove money from your account. Debit cards lock your actual funds.
How much is the debit card surcharge?
€5–30 per day depending on supplier, location, and whether you have full insurance.
Can I use a pre-paid card?
Almost never. Most suppliers explicitly exclude pre-paid or virtual cards. They want a linked bank account.
What if I have no credit card at all?
Book with Enterprise (UK/Ireland), Sixt (selected locations), or Dollar (USA). Alternatively, use a debit-friendly broker who pre-pays the supplier.
Does the deposit get refunded to debit cards?
Yes, but it takes 7–21 working days. Your bank processes the release, not the rental company.
Can I add a second driver with a debit card?
Suppliers who accept debit cards usually require the main driver to book. Additional driver fees still apply (€8–15/day).
Is Apple Pay or Google Pay accepted?
Not at the desk. Contactless payment via phone is not accepted for deposits or pre-auth. You need the physical card.
