Tivat city pickup — tiny town, surprisingly smooth
Small pickup point but staff knew what they were doing. Great starting point for the Bay of Kotor. Car was newer than expected.
Car hire reviews
Car hire in Tivat is almost essential if you want to get beyond Porto Montenegro and see the Bay of Kotor properly. Tivat itself is easy enough without a car for a short stay, but the moment you add Kotor, Budva, Lovćen, or cross-border plans, a rental starts to pay for itself. Tivat Airport pickup is usually the best move because it is convenient, competitive, and saves you negotiating local transfers before you have even started the trip. The downside is that space is tight, summer arrivals stack up quickly, and smaller desks can feel rushed. Driving around the bay is scenic rather than fast, so patience matters more than horsepower. Parking can be awkward in peak season and road width is not always generous. A small automatic is ideal for most travellers. The reviews below show which Tivat suppliers are genuinely helpful, which ones overcomplicate the paperwork, and where a slightly higher rate buys a much smoother start.

I picked up my rental from Hertz at Tivat Airport late in the afternoon. There was a bit of a queue, but the staff member handled it efficiently and I was at the counter within fifteen minutes. As a solo traveller, I appreciated that they didn't try to aggressively upsell me on extra insurance, though I did note the hold deposit amount was clearly explained before we finalized everything. I was given a VW Polo which was perfect for navigating the winding roads along the coast. The car was clean and matched the class I booked online. It wasn't a lightning-fast process, but the service was professional and the car was reliable. Overall, a solid choice for exploring Montenegro.

We chose Local Rent for a quick weekend break in Montenegro, landing at Tivat Airport. The process was surprisingly smooth compared to some horror stories I've read about other agencies in the region. The representative was waiting for us at the arrivals hall, so there was no queue at all. They did ask about extra insurance coverage, which I expected, but they accepted my refusal without any drama or hard upsell. We got a Hyundai i20 that was a bit dusty on the outside but ran perfectly for the coastal drive. Getting the deposit hold released was straightforward when we returned the car. Overall, a reliable choice if you want a simple rental without hidden fees.

The fleet quality is better than average for Montenegro, but August arrivals can face a cramped counter area and rushed explanations on tolls, fuel and border paperwork.

Compact terminal, short queues, and surprisingly transparent fuel rules compared with bigger Adriatic summer hubs.

Collected a Skoda Octavia from Sixt at Tivat. It was a dream — drove the whole Bay of Kotor coastal road. Staff were helpful and spoke great English.

Morning pickups are generally calm and staff are clearer than most on fuel and child-seat fees, but late arrivals report thinner staffing and longer waits at the desk.

I rented from Budget at Tivat Airport for a quick two-day business trip to the Bay of Kotor. The process was generally very efficient. There was a short queue of about three people when I arrived, but the staff moved things along quickly. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't aggressively push the extra insurance upsell, which was a relief. I received a Volkswagen Polo which was clean and perfect for the coastal roads. The only minor hiccup was the deposit hold taking a few days to clear after drop-off, but that's standard practice. Overall, a solid experience that I would recommend to colleagues.
