Airport vs City Centre Car Hire: Which Is Actually Cheaper?

6 May 2026ReviewCarHire Editorial Team6 min read

Airport pickup costs more upfront but saves time. City centre looks cheaper until you factor in taxis and train fares. Here's the real comparison.

The first decision most travellers make is where to collect the car. Airport desks are convenient but carry a premium. City centre branches look cheaper on the booking page but need a taxi or train to reach. By the time you add up the transfer cost, the airport vs city centre car hire debate is rarely as simple as it looks.

We looked at real bookings, real reviews, and real transfer costs across popular destinations. This is what the numbers actually say.

The airport premium is real

Airport car hire desks pay location fees, concession charges, and higher staffing costs. Those get passed to you. The premium varies by city:

DestinationAirport daily rateCity centre daily rateAirport premium
London€45–65€35–50+20–30%
Barcelona€32–48€25–38+15–25%
Rome€28–42€22–35+15–20%
Lisbon€25–38€20–30+15–25%
Dublin€35–50€28–40+15–20%
Berlin€30–45€24–36+15–20%

The premium is consistent. At London Heathrow the difference can hit €20 per day for the same car class. Over a week that is €140 — not small change.

But the transfer cost bites back

City centre branches only save money if you are already in the city. If you fly in and need to reach the branch, you pay for the transfer. Those costs add up fast:

Airport to cityTaxi one-wayTrain one-wayReturn for two
Heathrow to central London€70–90€30–40€140–180 or €60–80
Barcelona to city centre€35–45€8–12€70–90 or €16–24
Rome Fiumicino to Termini€50–60€14–18€100–120 or €28–36
Lisbon to city centre€20–30€4–6€40–60 or €8–12
Dublin to city centre€25–35€8–12€50–70 or €16–24

For a couple travelling together, the return train or taxi cost often wipes out the airport premium entirely. At Heathrow, a taxi return costs more than the weekly airport surcharge.

The time factor

Money is not the only cost. Time matters too.

Airport pickup means: land, collect bags, walk to desk, sign, drive. Usually 45–90 minutes from wheels down to wheels on the road.

City centre pickup means: land, collect bags, queue for train or taxi, travel to branch, sign, drive. That can add 1.5–3 hours depending on the city and your arrival time.

A traveller at Barcelona Airport put it plainly: "We saved €18 total by booking city centre. Spent 90 minutes on the train with jetlag and two kids. Never again."

When city centre genuinely wins

There are clear cases where the city branch makes sense:

You already live in or near the city No transfer cost, no airport hassle. Obvious win.

You are staying in the city for days before needing a car If you spend three nights in Lisbon before a road trip to Porto, collecting in the city centre on day four is logical.

The city branch has much better opening hours Some airport desks close at 22:00. City centre branches in business districts open until 19:00. For late flights, check both.

You want a specific car or supplier Not all suppliers operate at every airport. If you need a specific model or want a local supplier with better reviews, the city branch might be your only option.

When airport pickup is the clear choice

You land and want to drive immediately No train, no taxi, no map-reading in a new city with luggage. The premium buys convenience.

You have an early return flight Dropping at the airport on departure day is easier than driving into the city, parking, then getting back to the airport.

You are travelling with children or bulky luggage Trains and taxis with prams, ski bags, or three large cases are miserable. The airport desk lets you load the car right there.

The airport premium is under €5 a day At some smaller airports, the difference is negligible. In those cases the convenience wins by default.

One-way rentals: the hidden trap

Booking airport pickup and city centre return, or vice versa, is usually classed as a one-way rental. Suppliers charge for this, sometimes heavily.

  • Same-city one-way (airport to city centre): often free or €10–25
  • Different-city one-way: €50–150 plus distance charges
  • Cross-border one-way: €100–300 or not permitted

At Lisbon Airport, picking up and dropping at the city centre branch is usually free with major suppliers like Hertz and Avis. But check the terms before you book — not all suppliers allow it without a fee.

Supplier differences matter

Major international brands tend to have both airport and city branches. Local suppliers may only operate from one or the other.

  • Hertz, Avis, Sixt: strong airport presence, city branches in most capitals
  • Enterprise: excellent city centre coverage, sometimes better rates downtown
  • Local suppliers: often cheaper but may be airport-only or city-only, limiting your options

FAQ

Is airport car hire always more expensive?

Not always, but usually. The premium is 15–30% for the same car class. At some smaller airports the difference is negligible.

Can I pick up at the airport and return to a city centre branch?

Often yes, but check one-way fees. Within the same city it is sometimes free. Between cities it usually costs €50–150 extra.

Do city centre branches have the same cars as airport branches?

Usually yes for major suppliers. Local suppliers may have smaller or older fleets at city branches.

What about out-of-hours pickups?

Airport desks typically have longer hours, including late-night flights. City branches often close at 18:00 or 19:00. Check before booking if you arrive outside business hours.

Is parking at city centre branches free?

Rarely. You might need to pay for street parking or a car park while you do the paperwork. Airport desks usually have dedicated rental parking.

Should I book airport or city centre for a one-week holiday?

Airport pickup usually wins for a typical one-week fly-and-drive holiday. The convenience and time saving outweigh the premium for most travellers.

Do trains from the airport run 24 hours?

No. Most city airport trains stop between midnight and 05:00. If you have a late or early flight, a taxi or airport pickup is the safer bet.

Can I save money by taking a bus to the city centre instead?

Yes, airport buses are usually the cheapest transfer. But they add time, have limited luggage space, and may not stop near the rental branch. Factor in the walk or second transfer.
