Amsterdam city pickup: skip it, use the airport
City pickup was more expensive and parking was a nightmare. Europcar staff were helpful but the location itself is not convenient for tourists.
Car hire reviews
Car hire in Amsterdam makes sense primarily as a base for exploring beyond the canals. Inside central Amsterdam, a car is almost always a burden: parking is expensive, streets are narrow, and cyclists have right-of-way culture deeply embedded. But for road trips into the Dutch countryside, Belgian cities like Antwerp or Ghent, or German border towns, a rental opens up genuine flexibility. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport pickup is the best option for most travellers because it is efficient, well-signed, and lets you start on Dutch motorways without wrestling central parking first. City pickup can work if you are staying several nights in Amsterdam and only renting for the onward leg, but choice is narrower. Expect clear signage, excellent road surfaces, and compact cars as the practical norm. Right-hand drive is not a thing here, so continentals should feel at home. The reviews below help you identify which Amsterdam suppliers deliver smooth pickups and which ones overcomplicate the basics. For more on Benelux rentals, see our Netherlands car hire guide, and compare Sixt and Budget for strong regional coverage.

The pickup was flawlessly organised, typical Dutch efficiency. Our Volvo was nearly new, but the deposit hold and insurance pitch were both aggressive for a country with such good roads.

Compact car was essential for Amsterdam parking and they delivered. Staff warned about bike lanes and tram rules, which prevented at least one near-miss. Appreciated the local knowledge.

Central location near Leidseplein. Compact Fiat was essential for Amsterdam parking garages. Skip the airport surcharge.
