Car hire in Porto is underrated compared to Lisbon, and that works in your favour if you want dramatic coastlines, port wine regions, and fewer tourist crowds. Inside central Porto, a car is optional at best: the historic centre is compact, parking is tight, and the Douro riverside is walkable. But for trips into the Douro Valley, Braga, Guimarães, or the northern Portuguese coast, a rental becomes highly practical. Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) pickup is usually the best choice because it is small, efficient, and supplier competition keeps pricing honest. City pickup can work for later departures, but stock and timing tend to be better at the airport. Expect narrow mountain roads in the Douro, toll highways on main routes, and small hatchbacks as the ideal choice. Driving here is calmer than Lisbon, and parking is less punishing outside the centre. The reviews below show which Porto suppliers keep things straightforward and which ones turn a simple rental into admin. For more on Portuguese rentals, see our Portugal car hire guide, and compare Europcar and Hertz for reliable airport desks.

Porto Airport Goldcar — expect the upsell routine

€8/day excess waiver was pushed three times before they accepted our refusal. Peugeot 208 was great for Porto's hilly streets though. Know what you've already paid for.

Porto Airport Dollar — adequate but nothing memorable

Standard process: queue, paperwork, key. Clean car, ran fine, hassle-free return. No standout service moments either way. A solid middle-of-the-road option.
